Help Stop Foxtails

In the Douglas Family Preserve

Foxtails

If you’ve ever pulled foxtails from your dog’s paws, ears, or nose, you know how scary and expensive it can get fast.

We’re a local group working with the community and the city to reduce foxtails at Douglas Family Preserve and protect dogs on the trails.

Join the list for updates, donate if you can, and take action today.

The Problem

• Implement a clear early-season strategy to reduce foxtail seed production before peak dispersal.

• Integrate invasive grass control with native plant restoration to improve long-term habitat resilience.

• Provide transparency about vegetation management practices and timing within the preserve.

Who We Are & Why

StopFoxtails is a community-driven effort focused on improving vegetation management practices at Douglas Family Preserve.

We are local residents, dog owners, and park users who care deeply about the long-term health of this extraordinary coastal open space.

Our goal is simple:

• Protect dogs and park visitors from preventable foxtail injuries
 • Support responsible habitat stewardship
 • Encourage transparent, science-based vegetation management

This project seeks constructive solutions and collaboration with the City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department to ensure Douglas remains safe, accessible, and ecologically healthy.

What We Are Asking the City to Do

• Implement a clear early-season strategy to reduce foxtail seed production before peak dispersal.

• Integrate invasive grass control with native plant restoration to improve long-term habitat resilience.

• Provide transparency about vegetation management practices and timing within the preserve.

Why this Matters

• Douglas Family Preserve is one of Santa Barbara’s most heavily used dog recreation areas.

• Foxtail injuries are preventable when invasive grasses are managed before seeds mature.

• Thoughtful vegetation practices can improve safety while protecting native coastal habitat.
